What is a Casino?
Casino is a place where people gamble, and the best ones combine that thrill with luxury. While high stakes gamblers can find jackpots of hundreds of thousands of dollars, even low-rollers can enjoy opulent suites and a fine dining experience at casinos like Foxwoods.
Casinos are a feature of many resorts, hotels, restaurants, cruise ships, and standalone structures. They also feature a variety of gambling games, and some even host live entertainment. The most famous casinos are located in Las Vegas, Macau, and Monaco, but they are also found in cities around the world.
Most casinos have a physical security force and a specialized surveillance department, who patrol the premises to respond to requests for assistance and reports of suspicious or definite criminal activity. They also operate closed circuit television to monitor activity in and out of the casino, referred to as “eyes in the sky.”
The world’s biggest casinos aren’t all located in Las Vegas, though it is the most popular destination for tourists. Some are found in exotic locations such as Macau and Singapore. Others are part of opulent hotel complexes, such as the Venetian Macao and the Marina Bay Sands. Others stand out for their lavishness and extravagant displays, such as the Bellagio’s fountain – which has been featured in movies including The Hangover and Ocean’s 11 – and the exclusive poker rooms that attract pro players with high tables and stakes.
Some have a history of being frequented by spies, dispossessed royalty and other illustrious characters; the Casino Estoril in Portugal was reputedly visited by spies during World War II and inspired Ian Fleming’s James Bond novel “Casino Royale”. In the US, Foxwoods is the largest casino and offers a wide range of gambling activities. Other large casino sites include Winstar World Casino in Oklahoma, and a few in New Jersey.
